RCRC Receives County Support for Local Homeless Shelter

ROXBORO, N.C.--On Mon., July 17, 2023, Person Co. Board of Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of allocating $60,000 in leftover American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds to go toward a homeless shelter. To view the proposal presentation from Roxboro Community Redevelopment Corp. (RCRC) President Felts Lewis, click here.

N.C. Housing Finance Agency applications-one for a homeless shelter and one for a rental housing community-were completed and submitted according to the state's requirements. Roxboro Community Redevelopment Corp. (RCRC) is vying for $7 million to have new construction and $2 million for capitalized operations cost reserve (rental housing community only).

RCRC Ad-hoc Committee on Homelessness and others submitted over 20 support letters.  They came from the County, City, churches and various organizations to accompany the applications, showing that local support is here for both projects.

Decisions from the state are expected later this year.

RCRC needs support for the 2nd Annual RCRC Golf Challenge. This fun and important event takes place Fri., Sept. 15, 2023, starting with a 9 a.m. shotgun. Lunch will be at 1 p.m. Playing golf or not, all are invited to join us! Proceeds go toward affordable housing and homeless shelter operations costs. If you or your organization would like to be a sponsor, please contact me TODAY! Here is the event website for details and for golfers to sign up. RCRC are accepting goody bag items.

Homelessness has grown in Person Co. With no shelter in Person Co. and the state of North Carolina citing Person Co. as a primary county for homeless shelter funding, RCRC and community partners have been meeting since Jan. 2023, to create affordable housing and homelessness strategies to address these problems.

In July 2022, the City of Roxboro allocated $12,000 for RCRC to cover soft costs involving homelessness eradication efforts.
