Greenhouse to Bolster STEAM Education Among RHA Youths
Local dignitaries gathered for a greenhouse ribbon cutting event at Weatherly Heights Apts. community garden.
ROXBORO, N.C.--Roxboro Housing Authority's (RHA) STEAM - Greenhouse Learning Experience program is set start the Summer 2024 with the ribbon-cutting ceremony of a greenhouse gardening structure on Thurs., May 9.
This project is sponsored by Duke Energy Foundation. It is designed to have a greenhouse on open green space next to an existing community garden at RHA's Weatherly Heights apartment community. This is across the street from the Authority's program partner, South Elementary School, in the South Roxboro area of Person County.
Roxboro Housing Authority Executive Director Felts Lewis shares that the organization also wants to bolster academic success and economic self-sufficiency in underserved and underprivileged youth. "This will assist participants to recognize that, in the future, they can pursue post-secondary study and employment in the areas of STEAM."
Launched in 2019, the program is poised to continue to foster academic excellence through fun activities in the greenhouse and garden. Sparking an interest in science, technology, engineering, art and math, often referred to as STEAM, is paramount.
Roxboro Community Redevelopment Corp. (RCRC), RHA's 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, received a $10,000 grant in the Fall of 2023, to purchase a ready-made greenhouse delivered to the site along with funds to cover academic instruction.
