Roxboro Housing Authority (RHA) has delivered over 2,000 emergency meals for local youths. The public housing authority also has distributed free masks, books, toys and safety information.

"The meal distribution effort is a positive, safe and direct way to help families in need during the COVID-19 pandemic," said Felts Lewis, executive director. "It also allows RHA staff, commissioners and residents to stay in touch and exchange valuable information about various needs in the community."

As of Tuesday, June 2, 2020, the Authority distributed 2,105 meals, averaging over 125 meals per day. RHA's partnering non-profit Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina contracts with K&W Cafeteria to prepare and deliver meals throughout the work week. Meal distribution continues throughout the summer.

Meals accompanied with fat free or one percent milk are distributed to the parents of youths at all RHA sites: Harris Gardens Community Building on Mount Bethel Church Street; Green Gardens Community at Green and Walker Street; Lee Gardens Community Center on Lyle Street; and Weatherly Heights Community Center on Cleveland Lane.

Along with residents receiving masks and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services COVID-19 safety flyers. staff and others representing RHA passed out Census 2020 coloring books, water bottles and bags supplied by Person County's GIS Department. Free books were courtesy of Partnership for Children along with free toys provided by Person County Schools.

Meal site volunteers wear masks and gloves supplied by the Food Bank and practice social distancing. Volunteers also implement other Centers for Disease Control and Prevention health and safety measures. Adults pick up the meals for children and do not congregate within the site's meal distribution area.
